A BIT MORE ABOUT DARREN
Darren’s path to Planet Rock has been a long and wandering one – sort of like Star Trek Voyager trying to find its way back to Alpha Quadrant. But at long last he has arrived at The Mothership. Now, where’s Seven-of Nine?
The story so far goes like this…
Born and raised in the suburbs of Washington DC.
Sometime around 1977, Darren’s parents bought him a clock-radio. Loved WASH FM until he realised that the Captain and Tennille just didn’t rock. Subsequently, discovered DC101 which played Stairway to Heaven (made him cry – hey he was only 9!) and Manfred Mann’s Blinded By The Light (which scared him – long story).
The die was cast.
Discovered Rush around that time too and has spent many years trying to be Geddy Lee. In school, he was called Geddy Redick. It’s true.
But since his mother was a ballet teacher, Darren ended up pursuing a teenagehood of tights and T-shirts, only rocking out in various bands on the weekends.
Career in ballet followed, but he still got his Rickenbacker out when the tights were off. (Wey-hey!)
Got married. Managed to pursuade a lovely ballerina to say okay and walk down the aisle.
In 1997, said wife told Darren he had a nice voice and he should do radio.
Darren quit dancing and got a job as a presenter and salesman at Wey Valley Radio in Alton, Hants, doing…you guessed it…The Rock Show!
Several other stints in radio followed over the next 11 years at various stations in the south of England with a two-year break back home in Washington on WARW Classic Rock 94.7 The Arrow.
Over the years, he has interviewed many of his heroes including Rush, Keith Emerson, Alice Cooper, Ian Gillan, Steve Hackett, Kansas, Chris Cornell, Kid Rock, Dimebag and Vinnie Paul, Dream Theater and many more.
Darren says that he's thrilled to be joining the best radio station in the world.
Quick facts:
- Darren produced a series of radio shows with Keith Emerson on Total Rock called Emo’s Memos
- Nicknames: Badger (it’s a hair thing), Bandana (also a hair thing) and Doc Brown (propensity to shout, ‘Great Scott!’ at opportune moments. And it’s a hair thing)
