Phil Collins Retires (Or Does He?)

29th April 2008

After 100 million album sales, dozens of world tours, hit singles galore and a very brief film career it appears that Phil Collins has retired from the music industry.

The drummer/singer/producer apparently announced his retirement in The Times on Friday in a typically understated way. He simply says that he’s not got any more plans to record any music or tour again.

Collins has had his detractors in his career, not least by the fashion obsessed music industry, but they are quite frankly wrong.

  • Collins was drummer and then singer for Genesis – one of the most important and innovative bands of all time.
  • He was so respected by the people in the know that Robert Plant called on him to drum on his solo work and at the first Zep reunion.
  • He’s sold over 100 million albums.
  • As well as Mr Plant, he’s worked with Robert Fripp, Thin Lizzy, Brian Eno, Eric Clapton and David Crosby to name just a handful.

Last year the Phil Collins fronted Genesis incarnation reunited for a hugely successful world tour that played to hundreds of thousands of people around the world and spawned the Live In Rome DVD and Live Over Europe CD.

But what will Phil do instead? Well, he’ll apparently focus on his ever expanding ‘Battle of the Alamo’ memorabilia collection at his home in Switzerland.

For someone that has had music pulsating through his veins for the best part of 40 years, though, we suspect that music will call him back at some point in the future and that this “retirement” will be short lived.

I've just read, Phil Collins has not retired, apparently. He will do a few shows, but no tours. There maybe some new material from Genesis or Phil Collins.

Couldn't care less for Phil Collins the solo artist. It was always downhill since Face Value.

But as the genial drummer and latter front man of Genesis, who contributed so much to their songwriting and arrangements, he will be sorely missed by music lovers - that is, when he really does decide to retire for good, which I don't believe to be the case at this time.

The guy probably just made a casual remark about having 'no plans' to tour or record again. Well, I have 'no plans' for this weekend, but it doesn't mean I won't see it. Saying one has 'no plans' is not the same as saying one has retired indefinitely. And instead of an album, he may release a 'series of songs'.

Anyway, he needs to stick around to publicise the next remixing/remastering of the Genesis catalogue in 20 years time, when they decide to do an decent audiophile mix, instead of that over-compressed car/iPod-friendly noise that's just come out.

All hail the mighty Collins!

I remember hearing 'In the air tonight' as a lad at school and being knocked out by it, really blew me away (and the Cadbury's gorilla adds a new tiwst!). But sadly for me, his solo work that followed was not to my taste (but excellent production values etc. etc.). But the man has been a huge contribution to British music, of that there is no doubt, not least Genesis of course.

He may have been an acceptable drummer but beyond that, well, what can I say........I won't have to listen to his solo tosh any longer and thank heavens for that. An average pop artist at that and one who has me reaching for the 'off' switch at that, sorry

I currently have no plans to visit Australia.

This does not mean that I will never go there, just that at the moment it is not in my schedule.

If free time and money become available then I may well go.

I believe that Phil Collins has made comments in the same vein, "no plans" does not mean it will never happen, just nothing definite.
